Coming up: First chat at the new time, 26 Sept 2013

The next live chat is Thursday 26th September 2013 at 20:00-21:00 in the UK (BST), which is 21:00-22:00 in Europe (CEST) and 15:00-16:00 in New York (EDT). This chat will be hosted by Katie Wheat (@KL_Wheat).

In order to widen participation in #ECRchat, we have now moved to a new chat schedule. We will still meet every second Thursday, but now we will alternate between the usual time (11am BST, UK/8pm AEST, Australian eastern states) and the new time 8pm BST, UK/3pm EDT, US eastern states). This new time will coincide with the afternoon in the US, Canada, and Latin America, and early morning in New Zealand.

The next #ECRchat on 26th Sept will be the first of these newly timed chats.

I am looking forward to welcoming lots of new chatters who are unavailable at the usual chat time, but of course familiar faces are welcome too. I have created a poll with a mix of topic choices, with the possibility to re-visit old topics or to discuss something new. Please cast your vote in the poll below.

General welcome and introduction to #ECRchat

A chance for new and old chatters to get to know each other brainstorm about the possible topics we could cover in future chats. What is #ECRchat and what can it do for you?

Work/life balance

A second visit to one of the first few topics we ever discussed. An opportunity to bring in new perspectives and have a look at what changes we have made and where there is room for improvement in creating a healthy work and home life balance.

The fixed term contract trap

How can we cope with consecutive short-term contracts and frequent relocations? What (if anything) can we do to increase our chances of securing a permanent position? Is academia worth the insecurity or could we be better off elsewhere?

Using social media in the job search

Tips and hints for an efficient and successful job search online. The best ways to use different social media networks for a job search.

Ask #ECRchat anything

A return of the ‘ask #ECRchat anything’ chat format. Bring your questions, advice, or something you would like to get off your chest. Anything goes!

I look forward to chatting with you on Thursday. Don’t forget to vote and RT the poll!

Katie
