Coming Up: ECR chat on ‘Issues for ECRs in Minority Groups’, 3rd April 2014

The next live chat is Thursday 3rd April at 20:00-21:00 in the UK (GMT), 21:00-22:00 in Europe (CET), 15:00 New York (EST), which is Friday 09:00-10:00 in New Zealand (NZDT). This chat will be hosted by Dr Beth Hellen (@phdgeek), Research Fellow at the University of Rutgers, New Jersey.

We all know it’s tough being an ECR, but there are somethings that can make it even tougher. One of those is being part of a minority group – Women, LGBT, People of colour, People with a disability, others that I may not have thought of…

This ECRchat is a chance to explore some of the diverse issues that affect people in these groups and whether there are things that we can do as a community to improve the situation. We hope that both people who identify as a member of one of these groups and people who don’t will join in the discussion. Allies are just as important in helping to make the ECR environment more inclusive for people in minority groups.

Disclaimers:

1. I’m sure it doesn’t need to be said, but this is a safe space – no bigotry will be tolerated, but neither will any ridicule of people who aren’t aware of the issues. We can’t all be experts and if you’re not aware of some of the challenges people in these groups face, use this session as a chance to get educated.

2. Please remember that twitter is a public forum. What you post can be seen by the world, if you don’t want your gender, ethnicity, any other aspect of your life to be public knowledge, don’t mention it.
